10 Best Characters in The Walking Dead, According to Ranker

The Walking Dead has had a lot of people come and leave over the years. Some characters, whether alive or dead, remain fan favourites.

For more than a decade, viewers have flocked to The Walking Dead as a source of entertainment. Character turnover is high when a show is set in a post-apocalyptic world full of flesh-eating zombies and dangerously desperate people, which leads to a long list of possible fan favourites.

10Negan Smith

Negan alone in a junkyard in The Walking Dead

The fact that this devilishly charming villain is the lone baddie on the list will come as no surprise to fans of the programme. Negan, as played by Jeffery Dean Morgan, is perhaps the most charming, sometimes even humorous villain on The Walking Dead, and his horribly cruel deeds in season 7 generated some of the most gut-wrenching, soul-crushing scenes in the show. That, combined with his extremely complicated past and his apparent genuine compassion for Carl and Judith, leaves anyone torn between loving to hate him and hating to love him.

9Tyreese Williams

Tyreese near a window in The Walking Dead

Tyreese, aka Ty, joined the gang in season 3 with his sister, Sasha, and rapidly established himself as a fan favourite. Ty, played by Chad Coleman, is a compassionate voice in a society torn by fear and violence. Ty can hold his own when necessary, yet he always chooses the route of kindness and forgiveness when available (which is the only reason Carol is still with us). In season 4, he's also the only reason why infant Judith survives the Governor's prison attack. Fans lamented his demise in season 5, and he remains a fan favourite after more than 5 seasons.

8Abraham Ford

Michael Cudlitz as Abraham in The Walking Dead

Abraham, played by Michael Cudlitz, first appears in Season 4 of the programme. Abraham, a former US Army Sergeant, is noisy, comically obnoxious, and a tenacious brute force to be reckoned with. He also suffers from a deep feeling of pessimism brought on by unresolved PTSD and the death of his family, making his character more nuanced than he appears at first. Abraham meets his fate, unwavering, head held high, gazing Negan straight in the eyes, much to the disappointment of viewers, just as he discovers a renewed sense of hope.

7Maggie Greene

Carol aiming a gun at a walker in The Walking Dead

Maggie has made it through two seasons of The Walking Dead. When Rick and his gang come across her family's farm, she is first exposed to the public. Maggie, along with her father, Hershel, and sister, Beth, departs with the group as the farm catches fire and is overrun by walkers. Maggie is a quick-thinking, strong-willed, loyal, and fair character with a great sense of survival, as played by Lauren Cohan.

Maggie leaves the gang (and the show) in season 9, shortly after Rick decides to spare Negan, a choice Maggie cannot accept in light of Negan's treatment of her husband, Glenn. Her absence was missed by fans, who were overjoyed to see her return at the close of season 10. Over the next remaining episodes, there should be enough more to learn about her character.

6Hershel Greene

Scott Wilson's character Hershel joins the show in season 2 with his daughters Maggie and Beth, as well as newcomers Otis, Patricia, and Jimmy (who don't last the season). After Otis inadvertently shoots the youngster while hunting, he invites Rick's gang to camp on his farm while he attends to Carl. Hershel, a devout Christian, believes the walkers may be cured and begins corralling wayward walkers (along with his zombie wife) into his barn for security. Hershel is eventually forced to face the harsh reality, and events lead to him becoming one of Rick's most valued advisors and the group's closest thing to a doctor, as he was a veterinarian prior to the apocalypse.

5Carol Peletier

Carol walking through the woods in The Walking Dead

Carol is one of the two characters from Season 1 who hasn't died yet. Carol is introduced to fans as the protective mother of a young daughter, Sophia, and the wife of an abusive guy, Ed, as played by Melissa McBride. Carol's spouse dies early on, much to the delight of fans, allowing her character to breathe. Carol's daughter Sophia's death is one of the first character deaths to make viewers cry, and it becomes a defining milestone in her life, leading her to become a tough, often manipulative survivor.

Carol is capable of being cruel, especially when it comes to defending her loved ones. She has been terribly wounded by loss, and she frequently pushes those closest to her away. Despite her best efforts, she is highly influenced by her allegiance to people she considers family, despite her best efforts to hide how much she cares.

4Michonne Hawthorne

Michonne in The Walking Dead Season 10

Danai Gurira's character Michonne had one of the show's most intriguing beginnings. She first appears at the end of Season 2 as a veiled woman with a katana and accompanied by a handful of leashed walkers who protects Andrea from an attacking walker. Michonne appears austere, harsh, and pragmatic at first, but as she becomes more comfortable with the group and lets her guard down, deeper layers reveal her as a loving and caring person. She's extremely devoted, a true swordswoman, and will battle zealously for those she cares about. She leaves the group and the show in season 10 in quest of her romantic partner, Rick, after learning that he may still be alive.

3Rick Grimes

Rick Grimes shoots Sophia in The Walking Dead

Rick is the show's primary character and the group's leader until season 9, when he leaves the show. Rick, played by Andrew Lincoln, is the first character introduced in the programme, when he wakes up alone and dehydrated in a hospital bed, only to learn the world has been overtaken by the undead and his loved ones have gone missing. He has some important survival abilities as a sheriff's deputy, and he finally discovers his wife, son, and closest friend/deputy partner among a group of survivors. Rick subsequently takes over as the group's natural leader, putting him in a variety of moral issues as he takes on the task of keeping everyone alive.

Rick does his best to guide his gang through the hardships of a post-apocalyptic world while preserving some kind of a moral compass, even when violence is the only option. Rick is caught in an explosion in Season 9, and the group fears he has been dead. Fans, on the other hand, know better.

2Glenn Rhee

Glenn, played by Steven Yeun, is a brilliant, kind, and daredevil character. In season 1, episode 2, he saves Rick from a swarm of walkers for the first time. Glenn, a fan favourite, is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise suffocating scenario because of his fast thinking, compassion, comedy, and positivity. For many viewers of the show, his budding and eventually completely realised love with Maggie was a romantic focal point, which contributed to his horrible death at the hands of Negan in season 7 being possibly the most traumatising death the programme has ever created. Glenn will always occupy a particular place in the hearts of fans as a loyal, trustworthy, and dependable member of the group.

1Daryl Dixon

Daryl in The Walking Dead season 11

Despite the fact that Daryl wasn't even a character in the comics, he remains a fan favourite. Daryl is perhaps one of the most altered characters in the show, having begun as a hot-headed, crossbow-wielding thorn in Rick's side in season one. In season 2, fans first see his softer side as he builds a bond with Carol and makes it his mission to recover her missing kid. Daryl matures into a respected and relied-upon member of the gang, accepting Rick as a brother and the group as his family, as he learns to deal with the rage he has from surviving an awful upbringing.

Daryl is a clever, observant, talented survivor and tracker, so it's no surprise that he and his best friend, Carol, are set to have their own show once The Walking Dead wraps up its 11th season. Daryl Dixon has a cult following.
