Slay the Spire [2020]
Gamers who love the aesthetic of samurai warriors getting ready for war will enjoy going through the extensive storyline here. What makes this unique and compelling is how the protagonist has to fight his way out, whether he wants to or not – there are several ways to win by winning this combat. At the end of each day, he returns home to his son to lead his clan across lands at the edge of the forest. It really does feel like a samurai, although that might not be exactly where you expect from a fighting game. If you’re into action and strategy, Slay the Spire will take you to medieval times, battling against monsters, knights or archers.
Halo Infinite [2016]
Halo Infinite was one of the best mobile shooters ever created, boasting excellent graphics, well developed worlds and tons of memorable moments. While the multiplayer multiplayer aspect of Halo Infinite is incredibly popular, I personally think it is one of my personal favorite parts of my game. My only gripe would be the long, complex matchmaking system. Still, 343 is known for developing highly intuitive games, this one simply feels very old fashioned and doesn’t provide too much control.
Candy Crush Saga 2 [2013]
Candy Crush is arguably one of the biggest games with massive multiplayer servers available in 2020. Unfortunately, while it’s got an extremely loyal following of hardcore gamers, it tends to lose its momentum for other reasons. First, it requires both physical items (i.e. candy pieces) to get to various candy blocks or items. Second, if you want to use two or more candy blocks together, you simply swap them. Thirdly, a ton of candy blocks require three clicks to open, then another three to close, and then another three to open again. That’s a hell of a lot of combinations to try when trying to get back to a store. Then you also have to add yet another piece that needs to be used. Then another thing to buy, and more. And that is a long process in total. Combine that with having two or more players and multiple pieces that can be combined is too much. Additionally, the game is far from perfect, with some pretty obvious glitches that are mostly fixed later down the road. Yet despite all this issues, Candy Crush Saga 2 remains one of those truly unique titles that deserves replay. I recommend players give it a shot to see what made such an outstanding game so successful. Because when they say “It’s hard work,” it’s not.
Monument Valley 5 [2008]
Monument Valley is a classic survival horror game, featuring deep shadows and creepy creatures. Players can venture deeper into the woods, searching for treasures and secrets hidden in the shadows that lurk behind trees. They must survive and stay alive, avoiding predators that lurk in the shadows, crawling around obstacles and searching for food. The difficulty level increases as you progress through the levels, and you have to earn money to do so. Since you don’t pay for the actual items, but your ability to win is tied closely in with your character in the sense that you can defeat anything when it seems impossible. Monuments can be found at the bottom of the valley in the middle of town, leading to plenty of loot drops and easy walkthrough. Every night you take a bath in the water and leave a light on so that you can keep your eyes peeled for thieves. These criminals are just waiting to snatch everything that belongs to you! Plus, they are incredibly skilled at stealing, making it harder for you to defend yourself or scare you off. Finally, remember a key phrase in survival, “Don’t die.”
Fallout Shelter[2012]
Fallout Shelter is one of those rare stealth-style games that isn’t scary right away and leaves you feeling like an absolute fool for a bit. Fortunately, that’s actually kind of the point. It’s the opposite of Scaredy Cats, with stealth-driven combat and a huge variety of environments to explore. But fortunately for the average player, Fallout Shelter can be beaten quickly using brute force rather than skill. Once established, however, Fallout Shelter remains one of the most addictive, difficult games you can play and probably will ever play. Whether that's surprising is because Fallout Shelter is built around stealth, or is meant to be hard is a very subjective question. I personally like Fallout Shelter because there is always something new to discover when you open the door at the beginning of your adventure. Playing with others helps you discover more stuff outside of the norm, more unusual places to find items in your quest, and better equipment that boosts your survival chances. Without hesitation, this recommendation goes for Fallout Shelter over the top survival horror game Screamy Cat.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim [2008]
Well, to be fair, the original Bethesda published The Elder Scrolls took care of the puzzle that makes these types of games so special. Yes, there are definitely puzzles that come along when doing those typical exploration journeys, but nothing quite beats the sheer joy you get when navigating a gigantic virtual realm. Even though you might feel a little lost at times when you're wandering around your city, it is worth the challenge and exploring that your characters take pride in. Especially for novice campers like myself who aren’t sure of the exact route you're taking that week. In fact, I often wonder what you'd do with the entire collection of maps if you were to travel around the map. Or would you even be able to tell if someone else or you have gotten lost? The answer is yes! Having loads of random ideas for all sorts of directions, resources you can grab, and all sorts of awesome sights to spot can make traversing your environment so much more satisfying. Sure, you might find yourself stuck a couple of hours later and your choices become fairly limited which could make it seem like you were never actually there once. Nevertheless, Fallout does give you the tools and weapons you need to bring your family and friends with you, which is why Bethesda should get credit for creating one of the best RPGs.
The World of Warcraft [2007]
Wow, when Blizzard announced the release date of their groundbreaking RPG, it didn't come without controversy. Those of us who were avid WoW players did not know a game like WOW existed back then. Indeed, the idea of an MMO wasn’t new to us. Sadly, with the recent update that added Mists of Pandaria, Blizzard has been pushing people towards a subscription version rather than the free tier. Fans of WoW have no choice but to wait a little longer before finally receiving the full package that includes a robust assortment of powerful items to collect as well as an unforgettable journey. The main downside to buying a subscription is being unable to play on weekends as you will have to start up the queue for each class on a weekly basis. For me, these drawbacks are quite reasonable considering that it takes me almost two months to complete each account, and in the case of smaller accounts, I can afford to wait for a while, albeit a year. Nonetheless, the upside of purchasing a subscription is that you don’t have to buy expensive upgrades every month, ensuring that you have all the newest gear and goodies.
